Celtics-Nation: thank you for an amazing 2012-13 season - From the Desk of Nick Gelso
I cannot believe that the 2012-13 NBA season has concluded for the Boston Celtics.
After five (plus) seasons of deep playoff runs, it's very strange to have the off-season begin the first week of May. To put out a retrospective memo to the staff and listeners of CLNS Radio is nearly incomprehensible this early into the spring.
CLNS Radio was at one time a Boston Celtics based network. Though our expansion to cover all Boston sports teams is now complete, we still follow the NBA season as our business calendar. So, as the Celtics have gone fishing quite early this season, it's now the time to send out my reflections and thank you notes to the staff, listeners and readers of CLNS. It's become a ritual for our management team to reach out to you with our sincerest thank you!
So... here goes...
As many of you know, CLNS Radio is born from North Station Sports and Gino's Jungle. Back then, our two sites were primarily fan blogs with a dream of becoming real media, with access to the Celtics Locker Room. Brandon and I also dreamt of expanding our offerings to cover all New England sports teams. In 2012-13, I am so proud to say that we accomplished both and much, much more.
Getting caught up in the day to day bustle of managing a large staff, we easily lose sight of everything accomplished in such a short period of time.
Here are some of the highlights of 2012-13:
The NEW CLNS Radio:
In 2010, we launched the first CLNS Radio. At the time, it was a cutting edge, state of the art website, offering both audio and visual content. In a fast 3 years, the CLNS Radio website had become obsolete and barely functional. After applying months worth of bandages, it had become apparent that site was no-longer acceptable. We had planned for an off-season relaunch but things had gotten so bad that waiting was no-longer a possibility. Along came Joe Russo and his J&R Marketing web consulting firm. Joe has been a pleasure to work with. After 2 months of planning, conceptualizing and building a site from scratch, I can honestly say that the amount of pride consuming me has become over-whelming. Thanks to Joe, the vision of CLNS Radio becoming a one-stop-shop for New England sports coverage, has become a reality. Thank-you Joe!
Social Media Growth:
During mid-season, it became very obvious to Brandon, Sean and I had neglected our social media community sorely. Something had to be done quick as the YouTube, Facebook and Twitter following was an embarrassment. We quickly enacted a plan and promoted the never-tired Chris Hogan as our Director of Social Media. In 4 short months, Hogan quadrupled our social media following and today, we are very proud of the community that Chris built on all social media accounts for CLNS. Thank-you Chris Hogan!
The Garden Report:
I am still floored by this addition to the CLNS offerings. A huge undertaking by Jared Weiss, Jeff Clark and myself, the Garden Report has grown into one of the biggest marketing pieces on CLNS. I cannot thank Jared, Jimmy Toscano, Evans Clinchey and Lucas Parolin enough for their hard work and professionalism.
Sean Bakke:
His original nickname was the man who wears many hats... Today, we can honesly say that Mr. Bakke wears ALL OF THE HATS here at CLNS Radio. Promoted to content manager this season, Sean never missed a beat. The growth of the network coverage has been incredible and a direct reflection of the hard work of Sean Bakke. Thank-you Sean!
To everyone I may have missed:
When managing a staff of 50 plus people, it's easy to lose sight of the MANY people involved in making it all a possibility. I'd like to sincerely thank every member of the staff for their hard work, passion and commitment to the vision that is CLNS Radio.
So what's next???
CLNS Radio is not finished yet. Though the Celtics season has come to an end, the coverage at CLNS has not! You can expect more featured columns, podcasts and NBA-based events at CLNS. But, while the C's news slows down, you now have all of the New England sports coverage to keep you occupied and the CLNS'ers very busy!
In addition to the new site, expanded coverage, Garden Report and social media growth, you can now expect a CLNS Mobile APP - coming before the tip-off of the 2013-14 NBA season. Stay tuned for more details.
Until then, have a great summer all and thank you VERY much for your support, mailbag entries, encouragement and love. We love you all very much!
Sincerely,
Nick Gelso

Jordan Crawford continues taunting Carmelo Anthony, clearly not a representation of the Boston Celtics!
I've found myself questioning why Danny Ainge would bring Jordan Crawford to Boston. The Boston Celtics are a franchise that prides themselves on great players who take responsibility for their actions both on, and off the court.
As the Celtics made a decision to stay away from the pompous taunting tirades of their immature opponents, the seldom used Jordan Crawford shows his immaturity and lack of discipline while contradicting what his teammates are not saying and not doing.
Though Jason Terry had an appropriate response to J.R. Smith's proclamation that he has never heard of The Jet, that is about as far as his veteran teammates have gone in responding to the childish Knicks trash talking. Taking the stance of, shutting up off the court and putting up on the hardwood. That is, except the seldom used Jordan Crawford. Why? Maybe because he can't 'put anything up' on the court because he doesn't play. Possibly because he is a complete head case with no remorse or thought put into his performances on the court or comments off the court. Maybe because he's not capable of understanding what it means to have the word Celtics across his chest. Maybe just because he does not put too much thought into anything that doesn't bring attention to him.
Any of those reasons can be a suitable explanation as to why Crawford would put a damper on the Celtics classy way of reacting to the immaturity coming out of Madison Square Garden from their home-town Knicks.
Furthering Crawford's immaturity and impulsive nature, the Celtics backup shooting guard continued spewing idiocy following game 5...
“Nah, they was talking to me, baby," Crawford told the Boston Globe. "They was talking to me. Yeah, they like me. I think it’s that smile I keep carrying. I think we’re playing freely, not thinking as much.”
Hey Jordan, I think you are never thinking that much and your play, and actions/words of the court prove it. Crawford continued his bantering on Twitter and, this time, made Carmelo Anthony's now infamous wife the target. 'Melo's wife put Jordan in his place by tweeting to Jordan, lala Try again. You on the bench for a reason.
LaLa is correct here. Jordan is on the bench and Jordan should shut up.
Why in the name of the Basketball Gods would Jordan Crawford taunt Carmelo Anthony (or his wife) on the eve of another elimination game for his Celtic teammates? The worst thing for any team competing against the Knicks would be to taunt Carmelo Anthony, clearly the best player on the floor.
I highly doubt that the Knicks that wore their black threads to game 5 will be entering TD Garden, pretending it's a funeral home tonight.
My grandfather used to say, screw 'em all but 6 - he was referring to the 6 pallbearers that will carry your casket on the day of reckoning. FIVE NY Knicks wore their funeral dubs to game 5. So... where's the 6th pall bearer if the C's are to lose tonight? Let's donate a black tuxedo to Jordan Crawford to be the 6th pallbearer for New York if the C's are to lose tonight.
After the funeral, the Knicks can keep Jordan Crawford because this Celtics fan has seen quite enough of him.
SIDE NOTES: If you've not seen enough of Jordan already, check out this locker room video of how he reacts to questions by the Boston media. He doesn't understand the question. What do you understand Jordan? Go back to Washington, maybe you will understand when no media covers your team because nobody cares. In Boston, we care about our team, our players and our reputation. Any one who does not understand that, does not belong in our locker room. Good bye Jordan.
Reporter: What have you learned since being in Boston?
Jordan Crawford: Nothin'
Me: That's clear Jordan, you've learned 'nothin' and that's why you belong on another team where, "learnin' nothin' is acceptable

Tune into the Celtics Post Game Show tonight, following game 6.
Boston Celtics: The Color Black Motivates the Green
Since game 3 of this series, the Boston Celtics were facing an opening round elimination for the first time in the new-big three era. The New York Knicks had a grand plan to inform the C's of their dyer situation. NBA veteran and often controversial player, Kenyon Martin, suggested his teammates dress for a funeral Wednesday night. Displaying their confidence in a sure win at Madison Square Garden, the NY Knicks complied.
Over the years, the Boston Celtics have been known for their on-court trash talking. Rarely muted or moved by their opponents banter, the Celtics have never needed bulletin board motivation. However, this is a different season, a different situation and a different roster of players wearing green. The Celtics have been quiet, as their team fell down 0-3 in their first round series.
The Knicks have let the world know that they are on the verge of eliminating the Eastern Conference power-house Celtics.
Steve Kerr called the Knicks antics immature. The boasting bravado had encouraged Charles Barkley to openly root for the Celtics on Inside the NBA. Suddenly, the Celtics of the past, known for their own bullying and trash bagging over the years, found themselves on the top-side of the media mentions.
For those that may have forgotten the era of 2007 thru 2013, the core of the Boston Celtics have won one NBA championship, two Eastern Conference titles and five Atlantic Division crowns. What have the Knicks won?
I guess that doesn't matter to a team that's not advanced in the playoffs in a decade. The fact that the Knicks embarrassed the Celtics by bursting out to a 3-0 lead may have been the NBA title for the Knicks. They may crave nothing more this season. The Knicks may have won their division crown and embarrassed the Celtics in 3 games of this series. For a team that's won nothing and a fan base that has craved success of any sort, that may have been enough. The Celtics, however, are not finished yet.
Truth be told, the Boston Celtics, now on the verge of tying the series, have suddenly seen the tides turn and the C's are using quiet confidence, locked-in defense, superior play on the hardwood and tongue-in-cheek comments to motivate.
CLNS on-air personality and Network Manager, Sean Bakke, posted to Facebook, that was an old-school, Red Auerbach-type win.
I couldn't agree with Bakke more.
While J.R. Smith was dreaming of off-day golf, pretending he didn't know who Jason Terry was and the Knicks were dawning their new, all black-funeral threads, the Celtics kept the focus on themselves.
Jason Terry, a man who had high expectations behind him and the daunting task of filling Ray Allen's shoes, struggled all season long. While answering questions about his struggles, Terry constantly mentioned that he was brought to Boston for the playoffs. Through 2 games and 3.5 quarters of this post-season, Terry's struggles continued. In the closing minutes of game 3, J.R. Smith hit Jason with an intentional elbow and that seemed to fuel "The Jet."
I'm a 14 year veteran. You don't know who I am? You will know who I am after this series - Jason Terry following game 5
Before his game 5 exploits, The Jet stepped up in game 4, scoring 9 points in overtime and spreading his airplane wings. Yet Terry kept the focus on his veteran teammates and away from the Knicks trash talking.
"Me, personally, I've let Kevin down. I look at Kevin, see what he has to go through to get ready for a game. I know what he sacrificed to come back here this year. He's the reason why I'm here. I just don't want to let him down: I don't want his last impression to be, 'OK, we got swept,' or, 'We didn't give our best effort.'
At that moment, the New York Knicks were completing their master plan wardrobe for game 5. In an act similar to the Lakers raising the balloons to the rafter at the Forum in 1969, the Celtics had all they needed to muster together any energy remaining in they hobbled bones to pull out one more win. Can they do it again? Fans will have to wait until Friday to find out. While the Knicks fan-base were blowing up Twitter and Facebook with predictions for victory in game 6, Celtics fans were celebrating a victory and keeping their fingers crossed for one more miracle win at TD Garden. As displayed in the Celtics Post Game Show Wednesday, the fans are resembling the team they root for with quiet confident and taking it one game at a time. For the first time of the 2012-13 season, the Celtics and their fanbase seem to be on the same page. Is it possible that the Knicks have awakened the sleeping green giant? Tune in Friday night as the last acts of the Celtics 6 year saga continues... at least for now.J.R. Smith Jeopardizing Knicks' Advantage Over Celtics
On the eve of Game 5 against the Boston Celtics, New York Knicks super-sixth man J.R. Smith says that there wouldn't even be a Game 5 had he not elbowed Jason Terry in the closing minutes of Game 3.
From NY Daily News' Frank Isola:
Jason Terry goes by the nickname “Jet,” while the monikers Knicks fans will undoubtedly call the Boston Celtics guard will fall under the category of “parental discretion is advised.”
J.R. Smith, however, isn’t in the mood for name-calling. In fact, the volatile Knicks shooting guard, who was suspended for Game 4 for elbowing Terry in the chin, wouldn’t even acknowledge Terry’s existence when asked about him on the eve of Game 5 at the Garden.
“Who?”
Jason Terry.
“Who’s that? I don’t know who that is. I’m sorry.”
Terry is well known for his trash talking. Even Celtics fans had heard enough from Jet as his trash talking continued through his season-long struggles. All is forgiven quickly in Boston, however, and Terry scored 9 points in the overtime in the Celtics Game 4 win, beckoning memories of the long-time Celtic shooting guard Terry struggled to replace this season. The Knicks are not biting on Jet's bait.“I don’t need any more motivation, but he did add a little fuel to the fire,” Kenyon Martin said of Terry. “I’m not going back and forth with him, know what I am saying? We are trying to close this series out. It is not about what he is saying; it is about us going out and playing basketball.”
Smith says he should be playing golf right now. The Knicks seem confident they will wrap up the series in five tonight, advancing past the first round for the first time in a decade. Smith's reckless elbow showed that the 2012-13 Sixth Man of the Year still has much maturing to do. Smith, however, simply says he has learned not to throw elbows. But, it's much more than that . The Celtics love to play from behind. They have championship pedigree and though age and injury have taken their toll, the Knicks should not under estimate a team that has continually proven that they can defy odds. Is smith costing the Knicks their 3-0 lead over Boston? Recovering from such a deficit is a seemingly impossible, something that's never been done in NBA history. Though history is still in New York's corner, Smith and the Knicks have left the door open against a franchise that's become accustomed to making history. Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett excel under the bright lights of Madison Square Garden. Smith may have fueled the Jet just enough to provide the spark Boston has needed from its depleted bench. Jeff Green continues to prove the worth of his contract and show that he is a relevant cog in the team's post KG-Pierce era. But, the C's are still missing their super-star point guard. Rajon Rondo has been sitting on the sidelines in designer suits, while barking out encouragement to his teammates. Many questions still remain in this series as fans are pondering young Avery Bradley's abilities to run the point guard position. Will Courtney Lee climb out of Doc Rivers dog house or will Jordan Crawford's number be called again? Will Doc play any big-men off his bench tonight? One question the Celtics have continually answered since winning the lone title of this generation is that they like to play the under dog. Smith may have not just provided the suspension that gave the C's life, but now he continues to fuel the fire with trash talking. The biggest question in this series is can Smith, Carmelo Anthony and their Knicks bag their trash? Will the series end Wednesday, on a spring night in Manhattan or will the Celtics provide their fans with another game at home in this series? Tonight's game may answer many of those questions. If Boston can muster up some of that Celtics Mystique, the series will go back to Boston 3-2 and, at that point, anything certainly is possible.[video] The Most Devestating Weapon in the History of the NBA
The Los Angeles Lakers were swept tonight by the San Antonio Spurs. I logged onto YouTube to check in on our channel for post game pressers. While dribbling around, I stumbled into this interesting gem from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Absolutely fascinating documentary on the impact of the sky-hook; the most dangerous, yet beautiful shot in basketball history.
Because of the San Antonio sweep today, and the fact that our Celtics lived to see another game, prompted me to post this sympathy-video. I actually do feel a bit bad for the Lakers... well, I explained that here. In all honesty, watch the short documentary. It's well worth your 6 minutes.

Here's game 3's Garden Report:
The NBA Playoffs: Not So Amazing Anymore...
In sports, there's a special ring when certain teams or players are mentioned in the same sentence. The NBA has never had a compelling rivalry with such great tradition, sentimentality and natural fan interest as their hallmark matchup, Boston Celtics vs Los Angeles Lakers.
As the 2012-13 NBA Playoffs are heavy into the first round, the Celtics and Lakers are facing 0-2 deficits and unfamiliar territory.
Both teams are battling season-ending injuries to all-star players, both are facing imminent retirement of their future hall of famers, and both are unlikely to make
it out of the opening round of the playoffs for the first time 5+ years.
The NBA has moved their marketing focus to the Association's new top tier stars. Kobe Bryant has totally made way for LeBron James. Paul Pierce has passed the
Atlantic Division crown to Carmelo Anthony. Kevin Garnett is no-longer the league's best big man. Kevin Durant and his OKC Thunder now sit atop the west, while the Denver Nuggets, LA Clippers and Golden State Warriors are all climbing the ladder of the conference elite. Basketball traditionalists can thank the San Antonio Spurs for providing us with at least one team left from, what would now be considered, the old guard of the National Basketball Association.
Suddenly, the road to the NBA Finals has gotten very boring and the NBA's marketing is even worse.
The sport's lack of compelling story-lines has forced the NBA to over-hype their new stars. The national broadcasts have turned to sensationalistic garbage, with their on-air personalities in a constant hunt for the sound-byte capture of the season. The NBA has led many fans to believe that their own agenda promotes the success and popularity of teams like the Miami Heat, New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets. I've never been one to advocate the conspiracy theorists. However, I am admittedly a David Stern fan and even I can recognize the leeway granted to the aforementioned franchises.
I realize that the league has a brand that must endure regardless of transitions between players and eras. I just fear for the future of the NBA and, equally important, the integrity of the game and the fans in which the NBA is marketing towards.
You may call me a jaded Celtics' fan. I may be a bit jaded by my team's misfortunes in 2013. That being said, I recently heard that LeBron James is upset about finishing second in the running for Defensive Player of the Year. King James response? Who me? Second? No-way! I better call the commissioner and get this fixed!
Okay, i made that up but the simple fact that the thought runs through our minds, challenges the NBA's failing integrity level. Either way, James' real response wasn't too far from my version of it...
I guard everybody on the floor. I don't know if it's one player in NBA history that's guarded 1 (point guards) through 5 (centers). It's over with now, but it's cool. I have to know all the likes and dislikes, pros and cons, of each and every player in this league because at some point, I'm going to be matched up with them," -- LeBron James on finishing second for Defensive Player of Year - From ESPNThe King has spoken. He's coronating himself with yet another fraudulent crown. This time, the best defender of all-time and he is not happy about anyone disputing it. As with his coaches decision to rest players down the stretch not affecting his team's wallet, LeBron being upset about not winning the Defensive Player of the Year leads me to believe that they may have some hanging chads in the DOPY voting process. Recount anyone? Truth be told, these divisive and ridiculous claims do not come without validation from the NBA. The NBA has itself, created a double standard. The rules that apply to one team or player no longer applies to everyone - at least that's the wide spread perception and thus, the NBA has a perceived lack of integrity and credibility when it comes to sanctioning it's teams for infractions.
This also leads me to believe that the NBA's poor marketing is the number one indicator of just how desperate the league may be to appeal to the new fans, the teenage fans, the LeBron Generation of fans. The fans that actually believe that LeBron got jipped out of the DOPY award because he says so.
These tactics were not required when the players on the court had a hunger for winning championships first. No further fabrication of character and hype was needed, the great stories unfolding on the hardwood was enough to make all sports fans interested.
***
Who can forget the summer of 2008? The Celtics and Lakers resurrected the League's premier rivalry. NBATV was buzzing with the great Finals' matchups of the 1980's and the NBA's marketing campaign was nostalgically perfect. The direction the league had taken, during that season's playoffs was stuff that can make men cry. Watching split screen commercials of Bird and Magic, at their current age, yet in their former teams' uniforms was perfect. It made me proud to be an NBA fan first and a Boston Celtics fans second. Let's face it folks, it wasn't just Bird and Magic either. The split screen icons were meshed together with the NBA's super-stars of that period and it all seemed natural. It wasn't forced. It was Celtics vs Lakers - it couldn't have been more perfect.
The following 2 seasons, as LA and Boston were fighting for rematches in the NBA Finals, the League continued their campaign of celebrating the glory years of professional basketball. Just when I thought the previous season's split-screen sensations couldn't be topped, the NBA released the Amazing Commercials. This round of beauties prompted me to write one of my very first blog posts on the NBA's genius marketing campaigns. How times have changed.
The amazing play unfolding on the hardwood were perfectly woven into the selfless style and organic storylines of their marketing campaign, staring characters from 2 decades earlier. Great basketball doesn't die. It doesn't need to be poked or prodded. It's organic. It's natural and, like Bird and Magic said in their split screen match-up, true rivalries never die.
Of course, in 1987, when Magic Johnson hit that baby-hook over Bird, Parish and McHale, my heart sank to my feet. In 2009, when I saw it again, my heart swelled up with pride because, I witnessed it live. Magic Johnson beat my Boston Celtics in the 1987 Finals with that baby-hook from Magic. Watching it 20 years later and under the great special effects of the NBA's marketing team, I was just proud to have said that I witnessed it, despite the loss. For 20+ seasons, when seeing replays of Magic's shining moment, I would think to myself, why did Tragic have to make that shot? When the NBA launched this commercial, I took some relief in the fact that, even if Magic had missed that baby-hook, Kareem would have grabbed the rebound and dunked it home, insuring a win for the dreaded Lakers anyway.
I marveled at the commercial, while allowing myself to stop considering what may have been, had Magic hit the shot.
Oh... and did I mention that I was proud to say that I witnessed that game live?
That's what made the NBA so great during the glory years of the 80s and the resurgence of the Celtics - Lakers rivalry of 2008 thru 2012. I could say I was there in 1987 and I can boast that I was there during the two franchises' most recent rivalry.
Once the last round of warriors of today's game retire, what will be left? Just boasting, bragging, SportsCenter highlights and player low-lights through promoting their own personal agendas.
Advise for the Commissioners office? Search for a player who need not use words to prove their greatness. A player that rarely talks but when he does, people listen. This may take one season. It may take one year. OR this player may already be upon us but he's so good and so quiet that even the NBA neglects that fact that he's been here all along. He's a throw-back to the greats of yesteryear. He's not a self proclaimed chosen one. He needn't proclaim himself anything other than starved for a title - nothing else matters. He's already here, when will the NBA start taking notice?
