The New England Patriots look to keep Tom Brady happy and keep one of his favorite targets and best friend around a little longer. It has been reported today that Julian Edelman and the New England Patriots are nearing an agreement to a contract extension.
Edelman was set to make 3 million this season and become a free agent after the season is over. The Patriots are looking to get that situation all taken care of before Edelman can even sniff free agency. According to the NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, a contract could be signed within the next day or two.
The contract extension is coming off one of Edelman’ best seasons. Edelman reeled in 98 receptions for 1,106 yards and 3 touchdown in 2016. Not only was the regular season fruitful for Edelman, but the post season was where he made his money. Edelman tore apart defenses and totaled for 21 receptions, 342 yards, and a touchdown. No game could have been more important though than Super Bowl 51 where Edelman was a vital part in engineering one of the greatest comebacks ever. The Patriots had finally got in gear, but it looked like there would not be enough time left to pull of the comeback. With only minutes to go, the Patriots needed just a few more plays to tie the game and send it into overtime. At midfield, Tom Brady threw a pass that was tipped and every fan held their breath, for anyone, as long as the ball hit the ground, it would have been a win, just as long as it was not intercepted. The ball did not hit the ground, instead, through multiple hands, legs, and feet, Julian Edelman someone fought through a maze of Atlanta Falcons and made one of the greatest catches in Super Bowl history. Finally the Patriots had a miracle catch they could call their own.
Tom Brady will be happy to have Julian Edelman around a little longer and I think I speak for everyone saying we as fans would love to have him for a few more years as well.
UPDATE
The New England Patriots and Julian Edelman have agreed on a multi year extension according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. More to come.
