Always a colorful character, Rodman was brought up in a poor area of Dallas in a family where basketball was the norm - both of his older sisters were also All American players in their time.

As a professional in the NBA, Rodman won three championships back to back while with the Chicago Bulls - in 1996, 1997 and 1998. He was linked with stars including Madonna and Carmen Electra, and became known as one of the sport’s greatest ever rebounders.

His meeting with Kim Jong-un came in 2013 when he visited the country with a Vice reporter to host a series of basketball exhibitions. After befriending the leader, he has since returned to the country on several occasions, and American Kenneth Bae who was being held in the country, credits Rodman with raising awareness of his plight, and his eventual early release.
