The New England Patriots brought veteran defensive end Andre Carter in for a workout Monday, according to a report by ESPN Boston.
Carter, 34, appeared in 14 games for the Patriots in 2011, recording 10 sacks before a thigh injury sidelined him for the remainder of the season. In 2012 he had just 2.5 sacks in 12 games for the Oakland Raiders and was not signed by any team this offseason.
The Patriots have four active defensive ends on the roster, though 2012 third-round pick, Jake Bequette, did not play a single defensive snap in the team's season-opener.
Rob Ninkovich and Chandler Jones played every down and rookie Michael Buchanan saw some action in sub personnel packages.
Carter was a first-round pick by the San Francisco 49ers in 2001 and boasts 78.5 sacks in 12 NFL seasons.
