FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The Patriots signed rookie TE Evan Landi Tuesday night, and released first-year DL Jason Vega.
Vega, 26, is a Brockton native and played college ball for Northeastern before a two-year stint for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League. The 6-foot-4, 255-pounder recorded three tackles before injuring his knee during Friday's preseason game. His release, combined with Jermaine Cunningham's near-two week absence due to injury leaves the Pats depleted along the defensive line.
Landi, 23, was originally signed by Tampa Bay as a rookie free agent out of South Florida on April 29, 2013, but was released on June 4, 2013. The 6-foot-3, 236-pounder began his career at South Florida as a quarterback and receiver before moving to tight end for his final two seasons, finishing his career with 72 receptions for 846 yards and three touchdowns.
Landi's signing comes one day after the team released rookie TE Brandon Ford.
