Denver Broncos Steal Aqib Talib Away from New England Patriots

Written by

Aqib Talib has left the New England Patriots.  For the second year in a row the Patriots lost their best free agent head west.  This time it was a player the Patriots will really need to replace.  Patriots fans no doubt are in shock now, as Talib signed a 6 year 57 million dollar deal with Denver.  The Patriots are in a bit of a bind now at the corner position.  Talib made the Patriots tick on defense.

With Talib now off the market, along with other big time corner Alterraun Verner who signed with the Buccaneers earlier in the day, the Pats are in scramble mode.  The Patriots have a lot of making up to do now.  Their chief rival has gotten better on defense.  Short of trading for Darelle Revis or signing him when he gets cut, the Patriots don’t have the corner they need to make the defense work.  Talib’s defection hurts the Patriots by weakening the defense and making the AFC Champion Broncos that much better.

The Patriots need to make a move soon or it will be full time revolt by Patriots Nation.  The Patriots can’t just sit pat now.  They were obviously less of a team when they lost to the Broncos in Denver last year.  Many talked about the injuries being a key reason that they were beaten and that is true.  However, without a top corner like Talib the Patriots defense has taken a step back, even if all the injured players return to full health.

No doubt Patriots fans wish Bill Belichick was doing the same for Tom Brady, as John Elway is doing for Peyton Manning

The Patriots have always been fiscally responsible with the team. While this is great for the long term success of the team losing another player to the best team in the AFC is a deep wound.  The Patriots will need to step up in day two of free agency and over the next week.  The offseason is still young, but the Patriots need to get a jump on it now.
