FOXBOROUGH, Mass.—According to a tweet from Mike Garafolo of FoxSports.com, New England Patriots tight end Jake Ballard has been taken off the PUP list after passing his physical. Garafolo tweeted the following earlier this afternoon.
Pats TE Jake Ballard passed his physical, came off PUP today and presumably practiced. So chill on that.
Ballard had ACL and microfracture surgeries in 2012 missing all of last season, and was limited in what he could do during spring camp, according to a report from CBSBoston.com.
In 2011, Ballard enjoyed a solid season with the New York Giants catching 38 passes for 604 yards and four touchdowns. One of his four touchdowns that year came against New England as he snagged a one-yard pass from Eli Manning to wrestle victory away from the Patriots. He finished the game with four receptions for 67 yards and that touchdown.
The Springboro, Ohio native also made a small contribution in the Giants’ Super Bowl victory over the Patriots, catching two passes for 10 yards.
This is good news for the team as their depth at tight end is very thin right now. Hopefully, he will be able to fill some of the void left by the departure of Aaron Hernandez and the injury to Rob Gronkowski.
