The suddenly crowed wide receiving corps in New England just got a little more breathing room. The New England Patriots have waived Andre Holmes and the roster is now down to 88.
Holmes was waived on Saturday, according to league transaction wires, after he had signed with the Patriots in January. The Pats signed Hillsdale College product to the practice teakm in January and never even had the chance to play a down in Foxboro.
Holmes was considered a long shot to make the roster and not much was expected of him. Holmes became expendable after the Patriots drafted Aaron Dobson and Josh Boyce and also signed former Tennessee Titan Lavelle Hawkins.
Holmes has spent time in the NFL with Minnesota Vikings and the Dallas Cowboys. Holmes was only part of the Vikings practice team after the team signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2011. Holmes played last season with the Dallas Cowboys recording two receptions for eleven yards.
The exit of Holmes leaves the Patriots with 88 players on the roster, two shy of the maximum 90. The team had brought in guards Antoine Caldwell, Rex Hadnot, Tyronne Green, and former Dallas Cowboys running back Felix Jones. Neither of the four have been offered a contract with the New England Patriots at this time.
