With wide receiving still an area of need for the New England Patriots, the team signed former Atlanta Falcons and Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Michael Jenkins to a contract according to Mike Reiss from ESPNBoston.com.The signing of Jenkins isn't something to overly excited about since he is nothing more than a depth move and a third or receiver at best but will compete for backup role in training camp come July. Since being drafted in the first round in 2004, Jenkins hasn't lived up to expectations while never having more than 53 receptions and 777 yards in a season during his nine year career. He is considered to have dependable hands and good size at 6'4 214 lbs. One thing not to overlook with Jenkins is that has only fumbled three times in 130 games in his career.Last season with Vikings, he appeared in all 16 games catching 40 passes for 449 yards and two touchdowns.Expect the Patriots to continue to add some more wide receivers by the start of training camp to create more competition. Don't count out the team potentially draft West Virginia WR Tavon Austin, who the team has interest. Austin could certainly help this Patriots team in many different ways. Jenkins could ultimately be a camp body and be cut at any time but if needed could fill a backup role for this New England team.
