The Patriots look like they will be signing a cornerback to a multi-year big money deal and his name is not Malcolm Butler.
Reports from multiple sources this morning, including the NFL Networks Ian Rapoport and ESPN’s Adam Schefter, have stated that the New England Patriots will be signing former Buffalo Bills pro bowl cornerback, Stephon Gilmore.
Gilmore has been a 5 year starter for the Bills after he was drafted in the first round and experienced a career high in interceptions last season with 5. At 6’1 and 190 pounds, he has the size that teams these days are looking for in a starting cornerback and has progressed each year.
It has been reported that Gilmore’s contract could be worth up to 14.5 million a year.
This news does seem great on the surface as we immediately imagine the duo of Malcolm Butler and Stephon Gilmore, but when you think about it, could this mean the end of Super Bowl hero, Malcolm Butler’s run in New England? Butler has been adamant on getting an extension and making more money. He rightfully deserves a new contract, but that may be too rich for Bill Belichick’s blood and signing Gilmore to a contract could solidify that. Butler has also been linked to a possible trade for New Orleans Saints wide receiver, Brandin Cooks.
