Frozen Fenway: Providence Friars vs. Merrimack Warriors

Written by

The Friars head into the first outdoor game in program history having already faced Merrimack three times this season, getting the better of it twice and once playing to a draw.

Head coach Nate Leaman has led Providence to 13 wins, matching the program record, set in 1989-90. The fourth-ranked Friars are one of just four teams this season to have already notched 13 victories.

Junior forward Ross Mauermann is enjoying a breakout season, posting career highs in goals, with 13, while tallying 27 points. If the game comes down to the final stages, Mauermann, who has an NCAA leading, four game-winning goals, warrants more attention from both fans and players than anyone else on the ice.

In net, sophomore goaltender Jon Gillies is allowing just 1.88 goals per game and boasts a save percentage of .941. Freshman goaltender Nick Ellis has started the last three games for coach Leaman and recently posted a career high, 27 saves against Air Force.

As for the Warriors, after a 3-2 overtime loss to Yale, ranked ninth at the time, the team responded with a 3-2 victory of its own, taking down BU. The next night, Mark Dennehy’s club fought BU to a 1-1 tie in an overtime bought at Agannis Arena.

Overall, it has been a tough season for Merrimack, who is 4-9-2 and scoring less than two goals per game.

Quinn Gould and Hampus Gustafsson are tied for the team-lead in goals, each having notched 4. Mike Collins leads the team with eleven points. Between the pipes, Rasmus Tirronen is yielding just under two goals per game, helping to keep the Warriors competitive in most contests.
