Boston Red Sox 3B Pablo Sandoval To Have Shoulder Surgery

Written by

Maybe the Kung Fu Panda is really injured after all.

The Boston Red Sox announced on Monday evening that third baseman Pablo Sandoval will have surgery on his injured left shoulder in the coming days.

The team did not explain what the injury actually was, nor did they elaborate on the type of surgical procedure that will be performed by Dr. James Andrews on their ailing infielder.  They will provide that additional information after the surgery is completed.

Sandoval, who signed a five-year, $90 million free agent contract with the Sox last offseason, has been a huge disappointment in Boston after winning three rings with the San Francisco Giants.  He batted just .245 with 10 homers and 47 RBIs in 126 games last season, and was a liability at third base throughout the year.

He was criticized for his lack of effort on and off the field, and showed up the spring training out of shape for the second consecutive year with the Sox.  He then lost his starting job to Travis Shaw at the end of camp, and played in just three games this season before hitting the disabled list on April 13th with a shoulder strain.  There have been questions surrounding the injury, as Sandoval and the team have never actually explained when or how it happened, and did not elaborate on its severity other than calling it a strain.

With Shaw in the top 15 in the American League in batting average during the month of April, Sandoval may have a tough time cracking the lineup when he returns from the upcoming surgery.  But the 29-year-old still has time to turn his tenure in Boston around, and the first step is fixing whatever ailment is harming his shoulder.

My name is Adam Belue, I'm from Fall River, MA, and I'm a sports fanatic.  I'll watch and write about just about any and every sport, even the fringe ones that aren't really sports like bowling, poker, and ultimate frisbee.  I'm a huge Green Bay Packers fan, and a self-proclaimed New England Patriots hater (and proud of it!)... which makes my job in a sporting goods store quite interesting.  I'm a big fan of the other local teams (Bruins, Red Sox, and Celtics), along with the Alabama Crimson Tide and college football as a whole.  I may be a bit obsessed (or a lot obsessed) with Taylor Swift, and I've seen her in concert four times so far... some of the best times I've had by the way her concerts are quite the experience!  I'm also a huge tennis fan, and have played the sport for a good majority of my life.  I wish more people watched and appreciated tennis.  I'm currently a part of the Boston Bruins and Boston Red Sox Beat Team on CLNS Radio, and post a weekly fantasy football and college football column during the season.
