Boston Red Sox activate 1B Mike Napoli from DL

Written by

In order to stop their five game losing streak, the Boston Red Sox added much needed offense back in the lineup as they activated first baseman Mike Napoli before Sunday’s game in Detroit.

Napoli, who hasn’t been in the lineup since May 23  due to  a sprained fourth finger on his left hand will hit fifth tonight against the Tigers. In order to make room for him, Boston optioned outfielder Alex Hassan to Triple-A Pawtucket.

So far this year, Napoli has hit .260 with five home runs and 22 RBIs. Given the team’s offensive struggles recently, it is a good timing to have Napoli return from the DL despite Brock Holt filling in well for him over the past week at first base.

Hassan recorded his first major league hit last Sunday against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park and could return to team as a September callup but isn’t expect to be back until then. He was 1 for 7 with five strikeouts during his brief stint with the Red Sox. Hassan is expected to resume a starting outfield role with the Pawsox this week.
