Boston Red Sox add three players to 40-man roster

Written by

In order to protect them from being rule 5 draft eligible, the Red Sox added prospects Anthony Ranaudo, Bryce Brentz and Garin Cecchini to the 40 man roster, as the deadline to do so was tonight. Ranaudo boasted a 2.96 ERA split between Portland and Pawtucket this season after a rough 2012 with a 6.69 ERA, Brentz battled with injuries this year in Pawtucket and still managed to slug 17 homers in 82 games for Pawtucket, and the most intriguing of all to me is Garin Cecchini whose .443 OBP on the season puts me in awe over his potential.  With these three protected it appears as though no Red Sox players will be taken in the Rule 5 draft because none of them would be able to crack a roster spot on a 25 man roster and maintain it for a full year.

There were no corresponding roster moves since there were four open spots on the 40 man roster and now one still remains. Expect all three to start the season in Pawtucket.
