Will Middlebrooks' bat helps Boston Red Sox split series with Rockies

Written by

Coming off a poorly pitched game on Tuesday night in their 8-3 loss to the Colorado Rockies, the Boston Red Sox rebounded nicely on Wednesday to finish the brief two game series with a 15-5 win on Wednesday.

Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks sparked the Boston bats this series including a seven RBI night on Wednesday. Those seven RBIs included two home runs including a grand slam. Middlebrooks joins outfielder Shane Victorino as the other Red Sox player to have seven RBIs in the game this year. Victorino did it on August 28 with two run home runs himself.

Both Boston starters John Lackey and Jake Peavy struggled each during the series allowing four and five runs respectively. Each will have at least week in between starts before the major league baseball playoffs start. Peavy ended up getting the win on Wednesday and earned his first win agast Colorado since September 25, 2005 when he was with the San Diego Padres

Rockies first baseman Todd Helton, who was played in his final home series in his career for the Rockies had four hits and four RBIs in the two games against Boston.

Looking ahead: After their final regular season off day, Boston will travel Baltimore for a three game series to close out 2013 with the Orioles. The Red Sox are 2-5 so far this year at Camden Yards and face an Orioles team that was recently eliminated from postseason play.
