According to a report by Rob Bradford of Weei.com, the Red Sox will call up third baseman Will Middlebrooks on Saturday. The corresponding move is believed to be Brandon Snyder to the 15 day disabled list.
Middlebrooks' season has been a mixed bag including stints with the Boston Red Sox and the Pawtucket Red Sox. When looking at Middlebrooks' stats he was only hitting .192 over 53 games for the Red Sox to open the season. Middlebrooks played all but one game at third for the Red Sox this season when he was up with the club. Over those 53 games he did chip in nine home runs and 25 runs batted in but struggled with strikeouts. He accumulated 60 over 203 at bats which is an alarming 27.8% strikeout rate.
After Middlebrooks was demoted to Triple A the Red Sox have tried a multitude of options there. It started with playing defensive oriented Jose Iglesias regularly at third. Although, he was traded last week in the Jake Peavy deal that also brought Brayan Villarreal to Boston. Lately the Red Sox were using Brock Holt at third but he was struggling of late. Middlebrooks has heated up recently which probably played a huge role in his call-up as well as Iglesias' departure. Middlebrooks was on an eight-game hitting streak before being promoted, posting a .333/.361/.545 line during that span.
In 21 games for the Sox this season, Snyder has hit .209/.227/.419 with two homers and seven RBIs. No word on Snyder's injury but we'll be updating you as soon as we hear anything on the matter. According to Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe Middlebrooks is traveling to Kansas City and will be in the lineup tonight for the Red Sox playing third base.
