With the Major League Baseball trade deadline only two days away, the Boston Red Sox are expected to be one of the teams that could be aggressive in adding players to make a deep playoff run.
On Monday morning, Yahoo Sports baseball writer Jeff Passan tweeted that the Red Sox are “very much in” the Jake Peavy sweepstakes. Boston could use another starter like a Peavy but the asking price what the Chicago White Sox could demand maybe too high.
Passan went onto also say in the tweet that the Red Sox are motivated and with their strong share of prospects could get a deal if need be. Peavy, who missed sometime recently with a fractured rib injury has won his last two starts since coming off the disabled list despite not pitching greatly in his last start against the Detroit Tigers.
The asking price for Peavy could center around guys like Jacky Bradley Jr. or Xander Bogaerts but the team would be hesitant to move both since both are still young and are considered to be key parts of the team’s future. A few names including pitchers Anthony Ranaudo, Allen Webster, Brandon Workman could be discussed in a possible deal for Peavy. Also position players such as shortstop prospect Deven Marrero could intrigue the White Sox since they lack a true long term shortstop.
If the Red Sox don’t acquire Peavy expect them to still be aggressive at acquiring a starter even if it is not until August. The price tag may come down within the next day or two for Peavy but the team needs to know where to draw the fine line when dealing away prospects for a rental player and not derail the future at the same time.
