BOSTON-- According to a Tweet from the Boston Red Sox, Red Sox infielder Jose Iglesias has been named the American League Rookie of the Month for June. The team tweeted out the following earlier today.
#RedSox INF Jose Iglesias named AL Rookie of the Month for June. Iggy batted .395 with 17 runs & 11 multi-hit games in month.
He played in 25 games last month, logging 86 at-bats and producing 34 hits. Four of those hits were doubles while he knocked two three-baggers in addition to a home run and six RBI. The 23-year-old was also a minor threat on the base paths stealing two bases while being caught stolen once. June 11 against the rival Tampa Bay Rays proved to be his best game of the month. In four at-bats he cranked two hits, both of which went for doubles. He also struck out twice, but his offensive contributions and production that evening were certainly noted.
Iglesias has definitely started to come into his own. Last night was the perfect example as the Local Nine began their three-game interleague set with the San Diego Padres. In three at-bats, he dinged two hits and tallied one RBI which equaled a. 415 average for the game.
It will be interesting to see if he can keep up his stellar performance after the All Star break, as the dog days of late July and August come to the forefront of Boston’s schedule. One thing is for sure: The Red Sox have a gifted player in Jose Iglesias, and he is definitely a building block for the future.
