Boston Red Sox officially sign 1st Rounder LHP Trey Ball

Written by

On Wednesday, the Boston Red Sox made it official by signing first round draft pick Trey Ball, a left handed starting pitcher from New Castle HS in Indiana.

According to Alex Speier from WEEI.com, the Red Sox signed Ball, who was regarded as the top left handed pitcher in the draft to a $ 2.75 million dollar contract, which is $ 500,000 less than recommended slot of  $ 3.246 million for the seventh overall pick. The deal allows Boston to sign other potentially tough signees such as highly touted 22nd round HS outfielder Ryan Boldt or 32nd round HS catcher Matt Thaiss.

Boston has until July 15 to sign any draft picks they desire too.

During his senior year of high school, Ball went 6-0 with a 0.76 ERA in 46 innings striking out 93 strikeouts. Ball's fastball ranges from 91-94. He also throws a changeup that has plus potential and an improving curveball that ranges from 74-78 MPH.

It is expected that Ball starts his professional baseball career with the GCL Red Sox soon and could a top of the rotation starter for the Boston down the line.
