Decisions loom on Lyle Overbay and Ryan Sweeney for Red Sox

Written by

With opening day one week away, the Boston Red Sox have important roster decisions to make this week as both veterans Lyle Overbay and Ryan Sweeney could potentially become free agents if not added to the 40-man roster. Both are considered to be long shots to make the roster and if Boston doesn't add Overbay to the 40-man roster by Tuesday, then he can request a release and sign on with another team. In regards to Sweeney, if the Red Sox don't add him to the 40-man roster on Thursday, then he can request his release too.The Red Sox have players that are having better spring at bats than Sweeney and Overbay including Jackie Bradley Jr., Mike Carp and Daniel Nava, who could make the possibly make the opening day roster. Overbay is only hitting .222 in 18 games this spring and is limited in his versatility despite playing some outfield during the spring.Teams that could have interest in Overbay could include the New York Yankees, who have scouted him this spring and have a need at first base with Mark Teixeira out until at least early-June. The Milwaukee Brewers, who had interest earlier in the offseason could bring Overbay in as well.Stay tuned to CLNSRadio.com as we will have more on this story once the Red Sox finalize their roster later this week. Follow our CLNS Red Sox coverage on Twitter here: https://twitter.com/clnsredsoxFollow me on Twitter here: https://twitter.com/hoganreports
