Steven Wright Sent To DL With Sprained Knee

Written by

The Boston Red Sox not only lost a game on Monday night, but they also lost another starting pitcher to an injury.

Steven Wright’s abysmal 2017 season now contains a trip to the disabled list.

The Red Sox announced after Monday night’s 5-2 loss to the Orioles that the knuckleballer was headed to the 10-day DL with a knee sprain.

Wright has been affected by the injury since Spring Training, as he was seen wearing a knee brace prior to the start of the season.  The issue flared up on him after his last start on Saturday against the Cubs, which ironically saw his knuckleball move around more than in his previous outings this year.

The knuckleballer made the All-Star team for the Red Sox last year, but has underachieved on the hill in his five starts this season.  He has allowed four or more runs in four of those five starts, and he has surrendered nearly as many home runs this year (nine in just 24.0 innings) as in his entire 2016 campaign (12 in 156.2 innings).

Wright will be replaced on the 25-man roster by reliever Brandon Workman, who has pitched eight scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts in the Pawtucket bullpen this season.

The Sox will need a starting pitcher for Thursday night’s game against the Orioles, with Brian Johnson and Kyle Kendrick as the two likely options to make a spot start.  Johnson allowed four runs on seven hits on April 18th in Toronto to pick up his first career MLB victory, while Kendrick was outstanding in Spring Training this season and can opt out of his contract if he does not make the Red Sox roster by June 15th.  Both Johnson and Kendrick are scheduled to start for Pawtucket prior to Thursday, as Johnson pitched last Thursday while Kendrick took the hill last Friday.

My name is Adam Belue, I'm from Fall River, MA, and I'm a sports fanatic.  I'll watch and write about just about any and every sport, even the fringe ones that aren't really sports like bowling, poker, and ultimate frisbee.  I'm a huge Green Bay Packers fan, and a self-proclaimed New England Patriots hater (and proud of it!)... which makes my job in a sporting goods store quite interesting.  I'm a big fan of the other local teams (Bruins, Red Sox, and Celtics), along with the Alabama Crimson Tide and college football as a whole.  I may be a bit obsessed (or a lot obsessed) with Taylor Swift, and I've seen her in concert four times so far... some of the best times I've had by the way her concerts are quite the experience!  I'm also a huge tennis fan, and have played the sport for a good majority of my life.  I wish more people watched and appreciated tennis.  I'm currently a part of the Boston Bruins and Boston Red Sox Beat Team on CLNS Radio, and post a weekly fantasy football and college football column during the season.
