LHP C.C. Sabathia (NYY, 8-12, 4.10 ERA) vs. LHP Drew Pomeranz (BOS, 10-12, 3.25 ERA)
The Starting Pitchers
CC Sabathia gets the start coming off a dominant outing against the LA Dodgers. The lefty held them scoreless during his 6.1 innings and only gave up three hits.
The last time Sabathia faced Boston on July 16, he allowed five runs on nine hits over 5.1 frames en route to a loss.
On the Red Sox side, Drew Pomeranz had an ugly outing in his most recent start. The lefty only lasted two innings against the Orioles, giving up five runs.
Boston will need Pomeranz to rebound quickly as they remain in a tight race for the division title.
Holt Remains Out
Brock Holt has now gone a week without game action after injuring his shoulder.
The super utility man was said to be available last Thursday as a pinch-hitter, but did not get into the game, and has not played since.
He was also reported to be close to full health, so perhaps the lefty matchup is the main reason why he is not starting tonight. With Ortiz resting, Hanley is at DH and Shaw is playing first base, so there would have been an opening for Holt at third.
Pats Honor Ortiz
The New England Patriots invited David Ortiz to be an honorary captain for their game today versus the Miami Dolphins. The team also put together a video tribute for Ortiz prior to kickoff.
New England went on to defeat Miami 31-24.
Stat of the Day:
Since Craig Kimbrel returned from knee surgery, he has a 0.63 ERA with 27 SO in 14.1 innings. He's struck out 46% of the batters he's faced.— Jared Carrabis (@Jared_Carrabis) September 18, 2016
