Boston Red Sox News: Swihart Activated, Leon DFA, Wright Extra Man

Written by

The Boston Red Sox made some roster moves before Monday's doubleheader against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

The Sox activated catcher Blake Swihart from the 15-day disabled list, and designated Sandy Leon for assignment.  Manager John Farrell stated before the game that the team was looking for more offense from the position, with Swihart hitting over 60 points higher than Leon and producing more RBIs in less plate appearances.  Ryan Hanigan will still be the starting catcher for the Sox, but Swihart will get more at-bats and starts than a typical backup catcher.  Hanigan is in the starting lineup for the first game of the doubleheader, so Swihart will probably be behind the dish for the nightcap, catching Steven Wright.

Speaking of Wright, he will be activated prior to his start in Game 2, making him the 26th player on the Red Sox roster.  Boston will be able to use Wright tonight, then send him back down to Pawtucket immediately following the game, and bring him back up to start Friday's game against the Detroit Tigers.  The series with Detroit could showcase all three starting pitchers that were not on the Major League roster for the Sox to start the season, as Wright, Eduardo Rodriguez, and Brian Johnson would be slated to start this weekend.

Although Dustin Pedroia said that he could play three games on Monday, Farrell is planning on using him for just the first game of the doubleheader.  Pedroia was just activated from the DL on Friday, and the team clearly doesn't want to risk any further injuries to its second baseman by overworking him today.  The Sox have a loaded schedule in the next two weeks, playing every day until August 3rd, so resting Pedroia for a game or two per week is a likely option.  Brock Holt and Deven Marrero are available off the bench to start at second base, with both players not in the starting lineup for Game 1 on Monday.

Here is the lineup for Monday's first game, starting at 5:05 pm:

CF Mookie Betts

2B Dustin Pedroia

SS Xander Bogaerts

DH David Ortiz

LF Hanley Ramirez

3B Pablo Sandoval

1B Mike Napoli

RF Shane Victorino

C Ryan Hanigan

Adam Belue

My name is Adam Belue, I'm from Fall River, MA, and I'm a sports fanatic.  I'll watch and write about just about any and every sport, even the fringe ones that aren't really sports like bowling, poker, and ultimate frisbee.  I'm a huge Green Bay Packers fan, and a self-proclaimed New England Patriots hater (and proud of it!)... which makes my job in a sporting goods store quite interesting.  I'm a big fan of the other local teams (Bruins, Red Sox, and Celtics), along with the Alabama Crimson Tide and college football as a whole.  I may be a bit obsessed (or a lot obsessed) with Taylor Swift, and I've seen her in concert four times so far... some of the best times I've had by the way her concerts are quite the experience!  I'm also a huge tennis fan, and have played the sport for a good majority of my life.  I wish more people watched and appreciated tennis.  I'm currently a part of the Boston Bruins and Boston Red Sox Beat Team on CLNS Radio, and post a weekly fantasy football and college football column during the season.
