Finalized: Red Sox, Cespedes, Swapped For Detroit Tigers, Porcello.

Written by

I hope Yoenis was renting in Boston. He didn’t last a full season with the club. The Red Sox needed an arm, and followed through, landing Porcello.

Feeling the heat after losing out on the Jon Lester sweepstakes (signed with the Chicago Cubs), forced the hand of the Red Sox, acquiring right handed pitcher, Rick Porcello, from the Detroit Tigers.

Porcello, is the starting pitcher that Boston needed, but not exactly the one they wanted.

Starting six seasons, Porcello comes with a 76-63 record, 4.30 ERA and 655 strikeouts and 263 walks in 1073.1 innings. It’s important to note his 2014 numbers, Porcello was superb, going 15-13 with a 3.43 ERA and 129 strikeouts against 41 walks in 204.2 innings.

The team is still expected to acquire another arm, prior to the start of the season, hoping to land a legitimate, number one, threat on the mound. Whether it’s Max Scherzer on James Shield, or some type of avenue via a trade. Just a heads up: There likely not done retooling their bullpen.

With addition, comes subtraction, in the form of potential slugger, big armed outfielder Yoenis Cespedes, who is one and done with Boston, after being acquired at the deadline this season. The writing was on the wall for Cespedes, after the team agreed to terms with fellow outfielder, Hanley Ramirez, hence, making Cespedes expendable. Also heading to Detroit, pitcher Alex Wilson and a minor leaguer to be named later.

Cespedes and Porcello, can test free agency at the end of the next year. In a contract year, both players are likely hungry and willing to prove their worth.

Both teams had a surplus at each postion, so, it worked out for both sides. Only time will tell who wins this one.
