Jackie Bradley Jr. Demoted, Mookie Betts Recalled

Written by

In a move that many have been wondering if the Red Sox were going to make, the team decided today to send JBJ to Pawtucket to work on his offense, while seeing what Mookie Betts has to offer with the big club.

Jackie Bradley Jr.'s batting average has plummeted to .216 and went as low as .211 a few days ago, and it is finally time to switch it up.

He was mired in an 0-for-35 slump before he broke the skid with a single on August 13th vs. the Reds.

His defense has been spectacular, but to stay in the majors, players need offense and defense, and offense was just not happening.

For the season, in 112 games, JBJ has hit 1 HR and has 30 RBI. The team even tried to make him a defensive replacement in center in the last few innings of a couple games recently.

He is actually 5-for-his-last-16, so it might make sense to send him to AAA and keep his hitting going before he comes back up to the club on September 1st for the September call ups.

John Farrell spoke about the situation on Monday:

Felt like right now it was an opportunity to take advantage of the remaining three weeks left in the minor league season [for Bradley]. Hopefully to gain some confidence and some momentum when he comes back here. That's the reason for now.              -John Farrell

Mookie Betts will be making his third trip to Boston this season. Betts has hit .244 with 1 HR and 2 RBI in 13 games for the big league club. He is hitting .335 for Pawtucket this season and seems to be major league ready.
