The Boston Red Sox announced on Friday that they have designated 1B/OF Mike Carp for assignment.
Carp, 28, had requested a trade as he was unhappy with his role and the direction that the team was going in and Thursday gave the Red Sox a perfect opportunity to try an trade his but no suitors were vying for his services.
Carp on the season is hitting .189 with no home runs and nine runs batted in. Carp, a five-year-veteran, hit .296 with nine home runs and 43 runs batted in last season for Boston.
Carp missed all of June due to a broken foot and has not looked sharp this season.
With the addition of Allen Craig on Thursday and his ability to play 1B and OF, the Red Sox seemingly didn't need a right-handed hitting specialist off their bench.
Carp finishes his career with Boston with numbers looking like: 128 games played, .268, 9 home runs and 53 runs batted in.
