Rajon Rondo Still Far From Return to the Court

Written by

As reported by ESPN’s Chris Forsberg, all-star point guard Rajon Rondo is not close to a return yet.

Rondo, according to Boston Celtics President of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge, continues to make progress but still has a slight limp on his surgically repaired right knee.

"I don’t think he’s close," Ainge said in his weekly appearance on 98.5 The Sports Hub Thursday afternoon. "Meaning, I don’t think [his return is] going to happen the next few weeks. I think he’s still got a little bit of a limp; his strength is not quite there, but he is making progress. We’re not close."

Ainge, who suggested in prior weeks that Rondo may, in fact, be inching closer to his comeback, spoke very candidly about playing it safe.

“We’re not on pins and needles about it. We’re being very cautious with Rondo,” Ainge said.

Rondo is slated to meet with Doctor James Andrews in Florida in the coming weeks, hoping for the green light from the operating surgeon to return to basketball activities.

Until then, Ainge says he and the Celtics’ staff continue to watch cautiously.

"He’s just not himself yet, but he’s getting there and he’s pushing himself to get there. Listen, we’re going to be very cautious with him and make sure he’s right before he comes back. He’s gotta get that strength back in the knee up to 100 percent before they’ll let him back out on the court."

For now, Boston will continue to roll along with the team they have. Sitting atop the Atlantic Division in early December it seems as though there is no reason to rush Rondo back into the thick of things until he is ready.
