NBA Referee Dick Bavetta Retires After 39 Years

Written by

Dick Bavetta, 74, has officially retired from the NBA after 39 years as a referee. He never missed a game in his career, reffing 2,635 straight games from 1975-2014.

Dick Bavetta refereed 270 playoffs games and 27 NBA Finals games.

He was widely known as one of the most popular refs in the league because of his streak of games and being seemingly in incredible shape at an old age.

Bavetta said in a statement, "I am most proud of never having missed an assigned game, be it exhibition, regular season or playoffs, throughout my entire career. It really has been a great run."

Many people around the league are happy with the job Bavetta did for so long.

NBA president Rod Thorn said in a statement, "Dick's dedication and commitment to his craft has been an inspiration to all NBA officials. We are grateful for his contributions to our league, and we wish him the best as he enjoys his well-earned retirement."

With the good comes the bad, and Bavetta wasn't without his supposed faults too.

He was known for keeping games close, as he has been accused in the past of fixing games by calling much more fouls for the losing team when the game wasn't close.

Former NBA official, Tim Donaghy, told CLNS Radio:

Bavetta was the master at giving the NBA what they wanted, big market teams advancing to pad the bottom line. He proclaimed himself to be the NBA's go-to-guy.               -Tim Donaghy

Bavetta was also known to have a little fun, like when he raced and kissed Charles Barkey on All-Star weekend in 2007.
