Gary Bettman, NY Post At Odds Over Potential Coyotes Move To Vegas

Written by

You might want to hold off on betting on the NHL moving to Las Vegas.

The New York Post reported today that the NHL is arranging the sale of the Arizona Coyotes to billionaire William Foley, who will then move the team to Las Vegas, NV.

Late on Tuesday night, however, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman refuted the report.  He ripped the Post for running an article that he called "completely untrue".

"The Post was told the story was completely untrue," Bettman told Fox Sports Arizona's Craig Morgan.  "They ran it anyway.  The story is garbage.  Team is staying put."

Coyotes president, CEO, and co-owner Anthony LeBlanc also reaffirmed Bettman's stance, telling Morgan that "the article in the Post is 100% false".

According to the Post article, the team would play in a brand new, 20,000 seat arena that is currently being built in Sin City by MGM Resorts and arena operator AEG.  Las Vegas has recently reached 10,000 season ticket deposits, which was rumored to be the necessary amount in order to facilitate the acquisition of a franchise.

Foley would reportedly be looking to move the Coyotes to Vegas in the 2016-17 season.  The new arena would be finished and ready to open in the spring of 2016.

The Coyotes ranked 28th out of 30 teams in attendance last season, and the City Council in Glendale, AZ just voted to terminate the 15-year lease agreement that the team and the city signed when the Coyotes were purchased from the NHL in 2013.  The city was ordered on Monday to pay the franchise $3.75 million from their previous lease agreement.

The NHL is eyeing expanding in the near future, with Las Vegas, Toronto, and Seattle in the running for new franchises.  A press release from the NHL last week stated that although they are allowing cities and groups to pursue a franchise, it did not mean that any expansion teams would be granted as a result of the process.

Time will tell as to whether the New York Post article was incorrect, or if commissioner Bettman was just trying to protect the fan base of the Coyotes while the team is still located in Arizona for at least one more season.

My name is Adam Belue, I'm from Fall River, MA, and I'm a sports fanatic.  I'll watch and write about just about any and every sport, even the fringe ones that aren't really sports like bowling, poker, and ultimate frisbee.  I'm a huge Green Bay Packers fan, and a self-proclaimed New England Patriots hater (and proud of it!)... which makes my job in a sporting goods store quite interesting.  I'm a big fan of the other local teams (Bruins, Red Sox, and Celtics), along with the Alabama Crimson Tide and college football as a whole.  I may be a bit obsessed (or a lot obsessed) with Taylor Swift, and I've seen her in concert four times so far... some of the best times I've had by the way her concerts are quite the experience!  I'm also a huge tennis fan, and have played the sport for a good majority of my life.  I wish more people watched and appreciated tennis.  I'm currently a part of the Boston Bruins and Boston Red Sox Beat Team on CLNS Radio, and post a weekly fantasy football and college football column during the season.
