Zdeno Chara nominated for the Norris Trophy once again

The month of April just keeps getting better for the Boston Bruins workhorse defenseman.

Saturday’s win over the Detroit Red Wings, in the first round of the NHL playoffs, closed out a very successful month for the Boston Bruins. Now their All-Star defenseman is being rewarded for the season he had leading up to the playoffs.

The NHL announced on Monday that Zdeno Chara is a finalist for the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the league’s best defensemen. It is a title he is accustom to being nominated for and won in 2009.

“It’s obviously a huge honor ... I’m very humbled.” Said Chara on Monday.

Duncan Keith of the Chicago Blackhawks and Shea Weber of the Nashville Predators are the two other finalists for the Norris Trophy. Keith had the honor of wining the award in 2010. Weber finished second in the voting in both 2012 and 2013 respectively.

Chara had 17 goals, 23 assists for a total of 40 points this season. He is 6-foot-9 and has one of the league’s most powerful shots, currently holding the record in the NHL All-Star Skills Competition hardest shot at  108.8 mph.

Chara's teammate, Patrice Bergeron is nominated for the Selke Trophy, an award given to a forward who demonstrates the most skill in the defensive component of the game. 

Both Bruins are also joined be goalie Tuukka Rask, who is nominated for the Vezina Trophy which is an award given to the goalie "adjudged to be the best at the goalie position".

The NHL Awards will be held on Tuesday, June 24, at the Encore Theatre in Las Vegas.
