Bruce Cassidy will be back next year as the head coach of the Boston Bruins.

After going 18-8-1 to finish the regular season, the Bruins officially dropped the interim tag from Bruce Cassidy's title and named him head coach. The terms of his contract were not announced.

Cassidy will be the 28th coach the franchise has had.

He took over for the team in February after Claude Julien, the guy who held the position for 10 years, was fired. Cassidy led the Bruins to the playoffs for the first time in three seasons before being knocked out by the Ottawa Senators.

After Cassidy took over for Julien, he ranked first in the league in goals per game (3.37) and allowed the fewest shots (741).

The now-head coach spent five seasons as the head coach of the Bruins' AHL team in Providence. He was named Julien's assistant just this season.

Cassidy also coached the Washington Capitals for parts of two seasons from 2002-04.
