Boston Bruins' Loui Eriksson Out Indefinitely

Written by

Boston Bruins forward Loui Eriksson is out indefinitely with a concussion, according to Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli, who addressed the issue prior to Thursday night's game vs. the San Jose Sharks.

The concussion occurred during the third period of Wednesday night's game between the Bruins and the Buffalo Sabres.  Eriksson was hit with an elbow to the head by Sabres forward John Scott, who was issued a game misconduct penalty for the violent hit.  Immediately after Scott laid out Eriksson, Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid took it upon himself to issue a bit of punishment to Scott, engaging him in a fight while other Bruins teammates helped Eriksson off the ice.

Bruins head coach Claude Julien remarked prior to Thursday's game that while Eriksson was considered day-to-day and the severity of his condition had yet to be determined, he thought the concussion was pretty severe.  The Bruins have had their share of players who have dealt with severe concussions in recent history.  Patrice Bergeron played just three games in the 2007-08 season after he suffered a severe concussion, while Marc Savard has been sidelined since January 2011 after suffering two severe concussions in the span of ten months.

Scott is well-known around the league for being an enforcer, and many consider him a dirty player who does not deserve to be in the league.  In his six seasons in the NHL, Scott has scored just one goal and tallied just four assists while chalking up over 300 penalty minutes.  He averages just seven minutes of ice time in his career, and he's seeing just less than five minutes of ice time so far this season.  He has just one shot on goal in seven games this year.  Scott was involved in an incident during the preseason involving former Bruins player Phil Kessel, which sparked a brawl that included entire lines on both teams.

Eriksson was acquired by the Bruins on July 4th in the Tyler Seguin trade with the Dallas Stars.  He scored two goals and an assist in his first eight games with the squad, including the game-winning goal on October 12th vs. the Columbus Blue Jackets.

My name is Adam Belue, I'm from Fall River, MA, and I'm a sports fanatic.  I'll watch and write about just about any and every sport, even the fringe ones that aren't really sports like bowling, poker, and ultimate frisbee.  I'm a huge Green Bay Packers fan, and a self-proclaimed New England Patriots hater (and proud of it!)... which makes my job in a sporting goods store quite interesting.  I'm a big fan of the other local teams (Bruins, Red Sox, and Celtics), along with the Alabama Crimson Tide and college football as a whole.  I may be a bit obsessed (or a lot obsessed) with Taylor Swift, and I've seen her in concert four times so far... some of the best times I've had by the way her concerts are quite the experience!  I'm also a huge tennis fan, and have played the sport for a good majority of my life.  I wish more people watched and appreciated tennis.  I'm currently a part of the Boston Bruins and Boston Red Sox Beat Team on CLNS Radio, and post a weekly fantasy football and college football column during the season.
