Boston Bruins Trade Milan Lucic to Kings for First Round Pick and Prospects

Written by

The wheeling and dealing for the Boston Bruins continues.

The B's, who earlier today sent defenseman Dougie Hamilton to the Calgary Flames for three draft picks in Friday night's NHL Entry Draft (as reported by Kevin Maggiore from CLNS), made another huge deal, sending forward Milan Lucic to the Los Angeles Kings.

The Bruins acquired the No. 13 pick in the draft, along with two prospects - goaltender Martin Jones and defenseman Collin Miller - from the Kings in the deal.

Lucic is in the final year of his contract, and was owed $6 million against the NHL salary cap.  The Bruins were up against the cap coming into this offseason, so moving on from the enforcer was deemed necessary by new general manager Don Sweeney.  The B's, however, are reportedly going to pay for $2.7 million of Lucic's salary for next season.

The 27-year-old winger scored 18 goals and 26 assists in 81 games for the Bruins last season.  His points, assists, and goals totals were his lowest in a full season since 2008-09, and his pending free agency made an offseason trade seem very likely.

Jones, 25, played in 15 games for the Kings last season, notching a 4-5-2 record with a .906 save percentage.  He is a restricted free agent, and would be competing in a crowded race for the backup goalie spot if the Bruins retain him.

Miller, 22, had 19 goals and 33 assists in 70 games for the Manchester Monarchs of the AHL last season.  He added two goals and eight assists in 19 playoff games, guiding the Monarchs to the American Hockey League title.

This move gives Boston the 13th, 14th, and 15th picks in the first round, with the team clearly looking to package those picks to move up in the draft.  Noah Hanifin, a defenseman from Boston College, is the rumored target for the Bruins, and they would most likely have to move up to the third spot in the draft to ensure that they could select him.  The Arizona Coyotes hold the third pick, and are rumored to be willing to move the pick for the right price.

My name is Adam Belue, I'm from Fall River, MA, and I'm a sports fanatic.  I'll watch and write about just about any and every sport, even the fringe ones that aren't really sports like bowling, poker, and ultimate frisbee.  I'm a huge Green Bay Packers fan, and a self-proclaimed New England Patriots hater (and proud of it!)... which makes my job in a sporting goods store quite interesting.  I'm a big fan of the other local teams (Bruins, Red Sox, and Celtics), along with the Alabama Crimson Tide and college football as a whole.  I may be a bit obsessed (or a lot obsessed) with Taylor Swift, and I've seen her in concert four times so far... some of the best times I've had by the way her concerts are quite the experience!  I'm also a huge tennis fan, and have played the sport for a good majority of my life.  I wish more people watched and appreciated tennis.  I'm currently a part of the Boston Bruins and Boston Red Sox Beat Team on CLNS Radio, and post a weekly fantasy football and college football column during the season.
