So it’s a bit late in the day and I am about to do my “Rant of the Day” so what better way to do a late one than to talk about one thing that truly annoys me: why do the games in the World Series begin so late at night? I mean c’mon now, why does one have to get to bed past midnight if they want to watch american past time? I am sorry but this can’t be the best way for a sport that has lost it’s power as the top sport in the country to bring in more followers, especially the young ones. Does the MLB really need to have these games begin so late, or, as I truly believe does television run most sports and so it’s out of the hands of the ones that run the sport what time the games begin?
I am not a true baseball fan, but as I do with most of the pro sports, I follow it because there are players that once played at North Carolina who now roam the pro level, but when the playoffs come, I do try to follow it more closely, and the reality is that watching the games so late seems like a dumb move. I do not even like Monday Night Football that begins so late, when most of the season starts either at 1 pm or 4 pm EST. And do not even get me started about having six hours of pre-game for the Super Bowl, but that, at the end of the line, is one game, and so, a lot of times people will take the day off afterwards. The World Series can be seven games and people will not take a week off to stay up late, nor should they, as it would not take much to make it start an hour (or more) earlier!
And while I have spent many nights watching TNT as basketball would go late into the night, those games featured teams from the West Coast, while I have had to spend nights past midnight watching teams from my own time zone during the World Series, and I am sorry that just does not make sense. So, next time you are on the couch, eyes beginning to close, you look at the small time on the cable box and see that it’s past the witching hour remember of this “Rant of the Day” for November 17, 2001, because this will only get worst and not better, and that means more and more lost sleep thanks to the people who say they have the fans in mind but truly are being led by the commercial money that they get.
